What Do I Have? A Very Brief Add Outline For Teens

I see teenagers similar to you very often. You come for the evaluation and treatment of ADD. Or you may know you have ADD and have been treated with medication. But very often you don't know what makes up ADD, and which of your successes and problems might be due to the condition.

This is a one-page outline for those who don't like to read but who should know certain things about themselves:

  1. You are born with ADD. The problems are not your fault.
  2. Distractibility is a key problem.
  3. You may be restless now and might have been hyperactive as a child.
  4. You may get bored easily.
  5. You may get frustrated easily.
  6. Organization can be a problem. Your backpack may be a disaster.
  7. You may forget to write down assignments because you weren't paying attention.
  8. You may be in trouble for not doing homework (often a big problem).
  9. Reading can be a problem because after you read 6 or 7 pages you realize you have no idea what you read - a lack of attention to the material.
  10. You may misplace everything - cell phone, car keys, jacket, iPod, etc.
  11. You procrastinate and put off doing a project until the last night.
  12. Medication may be very helpful.

I hope this brief list mentioned things about yourself that you were aware of but couldn't explain. Now that you know the effects of ADD you can begin to figure out how to deal with your problems. The good news is there's lots of help available!
